I am fascinated by vocabulary, that is, the set of words we choose to describe our world of IG/RM. Our business has some distinct vocabularies that describe the properties of Objects (Files/Documents) as they exist in space and time and it’s important, we understand our common language.
When I started out “File” referred to a cream coloured manila folder in a drawer in a cabinet in rooms packed with said cabinets. The “File” contained every scrap of paper produced concerning the subject of the “File”. Some “Files” were several feet thick.
Now, we use computers, Information Governance Principles, Functional-Based File Classification Systems and Retention Schedules, Meta-data and alas, SharePoint.
As world has changed, so have the vocabularies we use. Folders contain objects known as documents. The word “Document” is used interchangeably with the word “File”. Document objects have descriptors baked into their structures (meta-data) that tell us what they are, where they belong, all to avoid being designated to the unstructured pile.
Ken’s presentation is timely and relevant. To understand where we are and why, it’s best to know just where we came from.
What are you interested in for future sessions. Is there something you want to learn about that will help you in your job and career? Do you have something you would like to present to your peers in ARMA? Please contact any member of the Executive with your thoughts. We are here to help.
Would you like something sooner to tide you over? Mel and Jess from the ARMA Vancouver Island Chapter provided a link to a great presentation “Implementing Information Governance at the Legislative Assembly of BC”, follow up at YouTube https://youtu.be/YBurrrEVmws .
Cheers.
